Final paper with more work to do...

Santa Barbara University (UCSB) has in huge influx of students who could already have issues with substance abuse or dual disorders. Addictions can take on many forms from substance abuse, alcoholism, and social/environmental disorders. Through out the years UCSB understands how effected the college has become and has incorporated extensive program to assist college students with addictions and personal barriers such as: online courses about substance abuse, trained counselors/therapist, and orientation of school policies and prevention programs. Jackie Kruta, PsyD, MFT is the Director with UCSB Alcohol & Drug Program with Student Heath, and feels with all the information for incoming students these programs can really help students to over come their addictions or personal barriers.
Student have the opportunity to check out wellness facilities not only for substance use but also for finding activities within the college area which promotes healthy ways to have fun. New students are required to complete the two online programs AlcoholEDU and second year GauchoFYI providing personal health information. Without completing the online courses students are not able to register for future quarters. Counseling programs are a huge part of the college scene and allows college students to see a counselor for several visits a year. College students have huge responsibilities to maintain grade point average, living far from their families, the image of the social life to fit in with their peers, and jut keeping their heads above water could cause any student to seek out counseling. If students have a substance problem they also can check into anonymous/confidential counseling to help them cope with deeper issues with the outpatient programs which UCSB has to offer. Services within student health program are vast with assessments, seminars, workshops, thirty-minute

guided meditation groups, website (sa.ucsb.edu/policies) which give a long list of links for various campus and divisional policies/regulations, and students can contact make confidential appointments with a counselor. Students are unaware of the UCSB policies with social gatherings on or off campus in order for a healthy,safe, college experience. Students may have the notion they are finally away from their parents guidelines or rules and think nothing of have a really good time for the first time. Drinking is a social acceptable and the peer pressure can play a huge part of the college lifestyle. One of the policies of drinking on campus could land a student in huge trouble “Not drinking in a dorm room with others who can drink is a direct violation of school policies” Jackie said, “When the student gets caught they must attached classes in Student Health.” Psycho education offers students who are mandated to be there or under age drinking by the residential hall, and they can learn more about ways to stay safe by making better choices, and not be influenced by their peers. With student health services there are many outreach program within the Santa Barbara community to provide answers for to the questions around drugs and alcohol.
Jackie has an extensive background with the community as Vice-President of the Board of Dictators for New Beginnings Counseling Center, Co-President to her current position as Coordinator of Disaster Mental Health Services, and her first internship was with Domestic Violence Solutions of Santa Barbara, and a good majority of her clients had suffered with alcohol/drug with could be a contribution factors with law enforcement issues. When asked in the interview about, “How did your background help to develop programs for UCSB?” Jackie informed me, “A lot of students are coming into the program to to learn about alcohol and drugs and ways to avoid risk,” and “not just my background experience but with the help of staff we were able to developed some good programs”. Learning more up-to-date advantages with webinars, attending conferences on specific to trends in psychology to stay


current as much as possible has helped to develop two programs at UCSB SAM and CASE. Each program is designed to the students specific needs and not all students are learning about ways to abstain from substance, but ways to cope with the stressors of college life. Some colleges only give you the standard amount of counseling time per year, but not UCSB they have a vast about of programs to help students to be safe, and find answers to some personal barriers.
Not all MFT or therapists are skilled in addiction or have had personal experience with substance abuse. In my years of experience working as a counselor clients would corner me asking a very personal question, “Are you in recovery,” and, “if so what was your drug of choice?” Clients always want to test you on a regular basis. Most students who have issues with substance may not relate to someone who does not have an addiction or in recovery. With most clients who are seeking out help most of the time they are more interested in the background of the counselor/therapist before they even start any form of therapy. If the counselor or therapist does not have the knowledge of addiction client may not continue therapy based on that. Some counselors or therapist have long background experience in various programs and have worked with diverse clients through out their years. Knowledge of various programs is part of the hours they must full fill to complete for their license. Some therapist do try to changeling themselves with a variety of special programs. Jackie did just that with her vast learning background experience to become a better therapist because Jackie does not have an addiction to any form of substance. How could students come into a session with her and feel secure Jackie will be able to help them. Jackie told me, “She took on a internship with Aegis treatment clinic helping clients who were on harm reduction from


Heroin with Methadone maintenance,” Working with extreme other side population was challenging, but very helpful in her career. A client really liked working with her because she was not in recovery, and she allowed him to tell her how he felt and not being told how he feels. Key to any good therapists is to listen and not disclose much about yourself. Motivation interviewing allows the client to find some of the answers to self discovery. If students think mood/behavior change, Blackouts, higher tolerance to alcohol or drugs, social anxiety, depression are just about growing up they are in for a big surprise because it's not. That is why UCSB is upping their game with “After Dark program supporting students to enjoy activities without alcohol or drugs. Connecting with “Office Residential Life” allowed UCSB to find ways to help students living in Isla Vista with AA and NA meetings, online certificate for a positive renter reference for a better credit score for renting in the future. Also, through the MacPherson.Intern@sa.ucsb.edu students can find a healthy internet connections with other students who want to socialize without substance. With weekend concerts, film festivals, cultural programs can also help with networking, and expanding their creative side for some classes pertaining to a particular subject. Even through the Superior Court of Santa Barbara system gives first offenders a chance to have a sentence revoked when attending UCSB SAM or CASE programs which was set up by Jackie working with the court system and drug court.

Adolescents on their way to dropping out of school and abusing drugs can be diverted toward healthier,more successful lives, according to NIDA-supported researchers. By using interventions designed specifically to address the personal and social factors that place some high school students at risk of drug abuse, schools can reduce these young people's drug use and other unhealthy behaviors, these researchers say.
One such drug abuse prevention program under way in the Seattle area has improved academic performance and reduced drug involvement among high school students whose poor academic records and behavioral problems indicate they are at high risk of dropping out of school and abusing drugs. Another drug abuse prevention program in California is showing promising early results in reducing and preventing serious drug use among students in continuation schools. Continuation schools are alternative public schools where students with behavioral and other problems can complete their high school education.

Annoying Ways People Use Sources

A friend of mine was introducing me to a group of friends at a party, and in a flash they were distracted by another person and then the conversation was all about the man they saw last night at the club, and I am left standing there waiting for my friend to come back with the introduction. If you ever known someone with ADD or ADHD you will understand how fast they can veer way off track from subject-to-subject, and in the article "Annoying Ways People Use Sources" the writer explaining how fast we can get off track when the conversation is flowing, and then there is a cite/quote comes out-of left field and the reader is left with "What are they trying to say," Which has happened in many of my own papers.

Not explaining the quote before you add it to the paper can feel disjointed. Knowing your cite or reference should always flow within the conversation of the paper. Dropping in a cite helps the reader identify with the topic, but without a tag line after about why you added the cite is confusing. Keeping up with the flow of the paper along with cites/quotes must be on point and not getting caught up with the inside story without telling the readers where the information came from. Give credit were credit is due without getting to much into the ADD brain, and if you do get lost and forget what was my main point of my paper you might get frustrated and the paper will be disjointed.

My new favorite way of writing will be formulating a flow chart or outline before I write to keep my Brain from running a muck..

College students have huge responsibilities to maintain grade point average, living far from their families, image of the social life to fit in with their peers, and jut keeping their heads above water could cause any student to seek out counseling. If students have a substance problems they also can check into anonymous/confidential counseling to help them cope with deeper issues with the outpatient programs which UCSB has to offer. Arguable Assertions

"A good argument is actually a lot like a good conversation" (P 148) is the power of persuasion of the pros and cons. In a heated debate you will always stand tall in your convictions because it is what you believe, but hearing the other persons side of the conversation is not always be easy to understand.

With any argument is facts about the claim with evidence is prove both sides. By seeing the whole side of the story is a lot like the article "Murder Rhetorically Speaking" finding evidence to the claims made about the murder itself, each scenario took you into more evidence base with everyone interpretation of the crime scene gave more and more details of evidence. Having the facts, circumstance, relationships and reasons is all the basis for a good argument. Once you have these concepts in place, writing a good paper with the right connections per paragraph hitting the reader head-on with excellent  pros and cons, and everything will fall right into place.

Take a group of people of ten, read them a story and you will have ten different concepts of what the story is about. That in itself is a good argument.

So What and Who Cares

"So What? Who Cares?"
Saying why it matters

As a writer sometimes I will assume the audience already know what I am trying to convey. I have been known to put into my paragraphs vague, unclear messages and most of my friends who have corrected my paper find it difficult to follow what I am trying to say. One of my early post I talked about my speed reading but also about my mind going way to fast and I always miss detailed information for my paper. 

I really like the article because of the awareness these question answered "So What and Who Cares" can make your argument geared towards the audience who will be reading the paper. Citing studies also draws your readers in, a creditable study shows it's not just your opinion, and naming the specific groups stakes claim to their personal interest. Many articles have been beat-to-death and when people read the article over and over again they might say, "So What." Making the article more world wide with a range of statistics from years past into current issues can allow the reader to understand the importance of the article. Not everyone stays up on current events, and bringing in awareness of what is current will make them understand the importance of  your message within the paper. 

The breakdown using the templates on the "So What and Who Cares" will be my asset for future papers.

Here is the 411 on Jackie Kurta, PsyD, MFT who I will be interviewing.

Jackie works with UCSB as the Director for the ADP (alcohol and drug program), and works as Assistant Coordinator for the UCSB Student Mental Health Program too.

On the UCSB website Alcohol & Drug Program Student Health is where I found Jackie's bio along with the vast organizations she current works with in the community. The UCSB has two program based on students needs for counseling. One is SAM designed as a process group where student share their experiences with alcohol and drugs with a counselor. SAM has a more therapeutic focus designed for student who already have knowledge of alcohol and drugs. The other program is CASE program and experience additional alcohol and drug problems such as, second violation of alcohol and drugs polices in residence halls.

SAM- brief assessment, weekly classes meetings, weekly assignments, journaling, participate actively and honestly, and must attend 5 classes. CASE- alcohol and drug information effects of blood alcohol concentration, discussion of health, social, academic, and legal consequences, risk reduction strategies, strategies for prevention, one brief assessment, and 5 weekly class meetings.

UCSB enforces stick policies and program to ensure the safety of students and the large number of students attending college.

Here is part of an email I received from Jackie Kurta:

I came to this career as a Therapist rather late in life compared to alot of my Antioch colleagues…I graduated from Tuft Univ in 1976 and didn’t return to graduate school until 2001…wasn’t sure I knew where I was headed but just knew that I wanted to be of service in some way…during my Antioch admission interview I remembered that when I graduated from high school, I had in mind to be a High School Guidance Counselor. I had actually forgotten about that until the Admissions person asked about my career goals when I was in high school…In the meantime, I had a full and thriving career in public relations, and then found my way back to this work...funny how things turn out….

Well, I’ve got three major career involvements at this time. 
1. Director of the Alcohol and Drug Program at UC Santa Barbara; I’ve been at UCSB for 12 years, 5 as director
2. Clinical Supervisor at Casa Serena; been doing this for about 6 years (?)
3. Vice-President of the Board of Directors for New Beginnings Counseling Center (2 years)

I closed my private practice (7 years) last January because I felt that I was not able to offer the appropriate amount of time to my private clients, and I preferred working in a collaborative team environment as I was doing at UCSB and Casa Serena. That was a difficult decision but I believe it was the right one. 

I am committed to working with “young/emerging adults” as I believe they are in a very critical time of their lives in terms of evaluating current choices and how these choices may impact future options.

One of my favorite conversation topics with a young person is asking: “Are you changing your behaviors to meet your goals, or are you changing your goals to meet your behaviors?” These discussions are quite enlightening 

I am currently trying to develop a 3 year strategic plan for the Alcohol and Drug Program at UCSB so we can continue to grow the program to meet the needs of current and future students.

Introduction to Primary Research

Research papers have not been my strong suit. I wrote a paper for my class during the spring break thinking I had a excellent paper, had the library assistant look it over, and she told me, "You paper is plagiarism." I was so upset because I know the teacher told us we could cut and paste. After a good cry, some chocolate, back home to fix the paper. My teacher told me it would be fine to turn in, but I was up at 5am to correct my mistake. 

I have come a small way ahead when it comes to writing a research paper. After reading this article I now know there many ways to find information, Observations, Surveys, and Interviews. In my line of work as a counselor I observe clients all the time, watching their body language, moods changing through out the day from pleasant to depressed, and emotional behaviors (the world is going to end it I don't get in touch with ???). I must collect data constantly without bring in my bias opinion into the mix. If there something I see with the client I always run it by another counselor to make sure I do not document wrong findings. The deductive reasoning and inductive reasoning is a constant checking outside resources with other facilities such as, Mental Health, DSM ( Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders), to narrow down a clients behavior to correspond with their treatment. 

I do face-to-face interviews with potential clients wanting to enter Casa for our treatment program. Using open ended questions if key to finding more about the person, and to obtain more information for the Program Manager to decided if  bring them into our program will be a good fit, or referring them to a better suited program for their needs.  Face-to-face is observation, survey with the initial interviewing process all in one. 

At this current time, I am taking surveys of all the clients who have completed the program (2015-2012), entering them into a spread sheet, with dates entry/one year out, email address and phone numbers,  calling every client to see how their recovery to going, how can we support you now, and with all this data the Executive Director will enter it into a power point for the board of Directors. 

So, I guess I am learning more about researching within my own job. Cool!

How to Read Like a Writer

At the beginning of the article it asked the question "Would you want to start you own essay with a quote?" (P. 73) If the quote can be tied into the genre with strong rhetoric references to back the quote effectively then why not. I been known to start a paper with a question or personal experience; if you are leading your reader on a journey or a memorable experience then I say "why not." Writing is an art in-it-self and you are the artist so make the paper your own style.

Speaking of style, I have been reading like a writer for years. I was a speed reader for years not retaining anything. My brain goes to fast and I was skipping over words, ad-libbing what I thought should be there, and just reading badly especially out-loud. A friend of mine helped me by giving me a ruler and had me read every word out-loud line by line. I would get the worst headaches, but it slowed me down to understand the text, where the writer was going with his/her article, able to comprehend the message, and most of all how much more insightful the writer could be. I always look at the style of writing to see if I could incorporate different ways to improve my writing such as, I like personal anecdotes or personal stories just to keep the reading interested, and to bring a small piece of myself to the reader. When writing a more formal paper I really tone down the personal touch because if the paper is more serious in nature then having details about me would not make the paper flow properly.

Backpacks vs Briefcases

"The Rhetorical Situation" reports there are three main topics to address when writing a paper exigence, audience and constrains. Requirement, intrinsic (belonging to a thing by it's very nature), circumstance or conditions helps find the leads to demands for rhetoric by obtaining the right reference to the an issues.  Knowing how to respond to the very nature of the audience will heighten the readers experience.

The article talks about  knowing your primary audience when writing a paper. Why are you targeting a specific audience and what is your argument or point of view/purpose?  When understanding your specific topic (subject at-hand) you can find ways to write on the topic by looking at other writers articles and dissecting their research to find if they achieved their goal of the argument  with clear point of view or did they veer-off  course. Using all three "artistic appeals" logos, pathos, and ethos will make your paper more evenly balanced.  I have a very emotional personality which could bleed into my writing if I am not careful. Understand the balance to persuade the audiences without my personal agenda in the mix can enhance my paper. How to be persuasive by addressing the paper with many aspects of pros and cons will bring in the audience into your world so-to-speak. Also, to be informative to reach many readers; even the scientific intellects who need prof or facts to bring them into the mix.

I am finding many different avenues to writing along winded paper with clear and-to-the-point and for these past few reading I am grateful it has come to my attention.

Finding Evidence

Finding Evidence has always been my downfall when I was instructed to to write a five page research paper for class. I am aware of on-line data, library reference, and connecting with fellow students, but in the article I have discovered a whole new world of ideas on how to seek out pertinent information to make my research paper even better.

Knowing there are many forms of resources available has opened up my eyes. Libraries have countless data basis which you cannot find on the Web. Understanding the more refine details to the paper can broaden the horizon of research with stories, journals, articles, and the secret data basis which can only be accessed through people who have knowledge of the data basis within the data basis. I spoke with a friend  about the project I am working on, and she told me "I can show you many library connection which can expand your research paper."  One of the things I tell my clients is to be more vulnerable by speaking up and not to feel uneducated about asking for help about something you are not sure of. Hence, that is what I did by asking for help with my writing project, and low and behold I now have a great contact.

Research is not just the library, websites, and fellow students, it's more than that. Knowing your audience gives you even more ways to explore outside of the box to have a more interesting paper without having a one-way paper going now where fast.  With personal experience can enhance the quality of the paper. Bring your self into the mix makes the paper becomes more human, compassionate, and real to life.

Murder! (Rhetorically Speaking)

Writing for the right audience is important to what genre will be presented before you even start. Finding various ways to convey genre conventions to fit the picture so to speak. With clear incite to the specialized jargon will allow your reader to have an understand of the concept with deep details for a more visual paper. 

If you read "Murder! (Rhetorically Speaking)" and in the story the man murdered was wearing a clown mask with a note attached "it's all in fun" you might have second thoughts to where the story was going and maybe it is not about a murder but a form of comedy. If you keep the convention genre the writing must stay on point or your audience will be confused, lost, and distracted from hearing the whole story. 

Details for using descriptive words in writing helps with movement, textures, sounds, and strong verbs. Being able to speak with this form of conviction allows the audience to stay focused and play along. In the topic "Cultivation Your Inner Coroner" was very helpful using more details can bring the man murdered into view with "having a birth-mark on his left forearm and a two-inch scar, or a detailed tattoo from maybe a local cartel gang. It's all in the details which I find helpful for my writing because the paper made me want to explore more in my mind to visualize how much more I could have added to the paper.

Academic Argument by Georgette

Academic Argument,

One of the key elements in the article was developing your own paper with interesting subjects for a clear successful essay. Understanding the right way to formulate the paper from the beginning to the conclusion.

It does not matter if the topic is yours or the instructor pick the topic. There are many ways to explore in depth how to write an outstanding paper. To explore is the key such as. checking in with the library to find searches on the subject through the data base, keeping notes on the topic by discussing it with classmates, arranging the paper with the most important facts to less important to see which is the strongest argument and position them in accordance, know your critical view on the topic and understand what the argument you are prepossessing, know your evidence and how it supports the subject, have pertinent points of view, record you resources carefully (give credit where credit is due), organize the paper and with the help of  your instructor for any extra pointers  you might need to have a cohesive paper, interesting point is to reverse the outline to see what section reads better at the beginning, middle and end, and edit edit because there is nothing worst then a paper without the solid flow.

By reading many of the other articles it is clear some of them read with a clear point, and others were very vague.   Having knowledge of genes helps to find many points of view from all angles.


The cat in ME

I had a teacher ask me if I could be any animal what would I be and why? That's easy I would be a cat, playful, mysterious, and very loyal.

In the past ten years or so I have worked as a Chef in many restaurants and bakeries within the Napa Valley area. Cooking and baking have been my passion ever sense I was twelve years old. After college I starting down the road of learning many aspects of the culinary field. The business is hard work and after many years it took and toll on my body. I decided to exit the culinary life style and pursue a new passion.

I always wanted to be a teacher and back to college I went. A student in one of my classes told me about the alcohol drug counseling program SBCC and it kindled a fire in me. In my first year a student told the class about a part time position with Path Point. After the interview I started down a whole new journey of my life of helping others as a Case Manager. I graduated in May of 2012 with my counseling certificate. In order to be a Certified counselor I had to take the state board test, work as an intern for 2,240 hours, and be registered with state affiliated companies. I worked in may various places learning every aspects of counseling. Some jobs I had were very helpful and some not at all, but I knew every place has there own way of doing things. Then I received a call from Casa Serena about a counseling position. I heard many wonderful things about this home helping women to over come addiction. After some time passed working as a counselor I could see my limited counseling skills need to be improved. Addiction is not just a one sided coin there are many underlining aspects to addiction such as, emotional trauma, environment issues which is know as Dual Disorders. After careful consideration I decided to attend Antioch for their BA in psychology program. I am excited for more self improvement to help young women become the women they always dreamed of being.


So the cat... I am loyal to Casa, playful with my clients to make them feel at home, and mysterious well that is just who I am.
